Abstract

This paper explores a style of inquiry that might be called a somaesthetic participatory cognitive science of ADHD. As a concrete demonstration, it focuses on feelings of restlessness in ADHD and interprets them as bodily feelings that can disturb the aesthetic quality of everyday experience. It then develops this interpretation into the somatic noise hypothesis, a hypothesis that can be examined within cognitive science: feelings of restlessness may function as noise that interferes with interoceptive bodily signals involved in prospective memory (PM) and thereby contribute to PM-related inattentive symptoms of ADHD.
