About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The Interdisciplinary Journal of International Studies (IJIS) is an independent student-driven and faculty-refereed academic journal based at Aalborg University, Denmark. It was established in 2002 on the initiative of the Study Board of the Diploma and Master Programmes in Development & International Relations (DIR) and European Studies (ES). Presently, the journal is supported by the Study Board for International Affairs under the Department of Politics and Society. IJIS has both print and online editions registered under ISSN 1602-9097 (print) and ISSN 1604-7095 (online).

IJIS is an academic space where students critically engage with key theories and issue areas in the social sciences and humanities in an interdisciplinary perspective. It invites contributions on topical themes (including, but not restricted to, development, globalization, international relations, political economy, regional integration, refugees and migration, culture, tourism, and history) and/or area studies (e.g., Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia, East Asia, China, South Asia, the US, and Latin America). It welcomes theoretical, methodological, conceptual, or empirical papers.

IJIS encourages graduate and postgraduate students from Aalborg University, former or current, to submit articles, essays, and reviews in the fields of social sciences and humanities.

IJIS reguirements for a journal article

The intention of this student journal is to allow you as current and former students to publish interesting work, which can be based on semester projects, your thesis or something completely new. Your draft will be reviewed by a professor from the study program, where the journal is located (DIR/ES/GRS). You will recieve feedback from the reviewer and suggestions for alterations. We do not expect you to write an academic article equivalent to a peer reviewed journal article: the idea is for (former) students to communicate their interesting results to broader audiences.

Format essence: Enhance the interesting results, cut right to the main findings and present these in a coherent way.

Peer Review Process

Submissions to the IJIS are subject to a peer-review process to ensure that papers for publications have original or sufficient contribution to scholarship. Submissions received by the Editor shall be reviewed by them in the first instance and then forwarded to respective faculty members who are recognized experts in particular fields in social sciences and humanities to be reviewed.

Each submitted manuscript is evaluated on the following basis:

  • the originality of its contribution to the field of international studies
  • the soundness of its theory and methodology given the topic
  • the coherence of its analysis
  • its ability to communicate to readers (grammar and style)

Normal turn-around time for evaluation of manuscripts is one to three months from the date of receipt
