Articles can include colour illustrations and images, as well as video links or embedded video clips.

For example, a guide how to film and/or record audio in particular settings and situations (camerawork), or how to synchronise and edit multicam video footage, or how to transcribe using a particular set of conventions and/or software, or how to anonymise video and audio footage for a specific analytical purpose. The guide should be no more than 4000 words and should be well illustrated. An abstract is required and should be no more than 100 words.

Tech Review

This section is for unbiased, critical reviews of technology that is to be used specifically for video-based qualitative research, such as cameras, lenses, microphones, eye trackers, capture devices, playback devices, ancillary equipment, etc.. New equipment arrives in the marketplace all the time, but there are few academic venues for serious reviews that address the scientific suitability, durability and acceptability of such equipment for qualitative research methods, both traditional and yet-to-be-invented. The review should be between 500 and 2000 words.

Software Review

This section is for short, unbiased reviews of software applications for qualitative video-based research. The software can be proprietary or open source, free or paid, standalone or cloud-based. The review should be between 500 and 2000 words.

Video Article

This section is for a video article in a standalone audiovisual format. The video articles can be ethnographic, analytical, reflective or reflexive. The audio format should be mono or stereo, although more experimental surround sound or spatial audio formats are welcome. A written abstract and short introduction to the video article is required. The abstract should be no more than 200 words.

Software

This section is for software archives. The software is archived either as an executable program or the source code on an open archive server, such as Zenodo or OSF. The original software may be open source on GitHub or GitLab, for example. A short article introduces the software, its architecture and use, and its methodological relevance and shortcomings. By following the instructions, the reader should be able to download the software and use it for its stated purpose. It should be possible for other developers to contribute in some way to the software.

The article should be no more than 4000 words. Abstracts should not be more than 100 words.

Data

This section is for non-peer reviewed video data archives. The data is archived on an open archive server, such as Zenodo or OSF. The archive may include video and audio files, transcripts, contextual diagrams, background documentation, notes, commentary, etc. A short article introduces the data, the setting and recording technology, the recorded setting, and the methodological relevance and shortcomings of the archive for qualitative research. The article should provide for anyone to reuse the data with an understanding of how it was collected and what was taking place in the recorded setting. Ethical concerns must be taken into account given the General Data Protection Regulations in the EU.

The article should be no more than 4000 words. Abstracts should not be more than 100 words.
