About

PLATE is an international, multidisciplinary conference that addresses product lifetimes in the context of sustainable development.

Product lifetimes are increasingly prominent in discussions concerning sustainability, particularly in the context of the circular economy, resource efficiency, waste reduction and climate change. A growing number of academic researchers, businesses, think tanks, government bodies and policy stakeholders are interested in understanding the effect that product longevity has on environmental, economic and social sustainability.

Initiated in order to share and develop expertise in this field of knowledge, the first Product Lifetimes and the Environment (PLATE) conference was held in 2015, at Nottingham Trent University in the UK. The second PLATE conference was held at the University of Delft in the Netherlands in 2017 and the third PLATE conference, in Berlin, Germany, was held in 2019, organised by Fraunhofer IZM in cooperation with Technische Universität Berlin. Due to the impact of the COVID pandemic, the fourth PLATE conference, held in 2021, was a virtual, online event, organised by the University of Limerick, Ireland. The fifth PLATE conference was a hybrid event organised by Aalto university, Finland held in 2023.

The 6th Product Lifetimes and the Environment (PLATE) Conference, hosted by Aalborg University in 2025, brings together a diverse and interdisciplinary community of scholars committed to extending product lifetimes and reducing environmental impact. 2025 marks a milestone in the development of the PLATE community. For the first time, the conference distinguishes between research papers and extended abstracts, where both contribution types are double blind peer-reviewed and published open access with individual DOIs. This transition reflects the field’s growing scientific rigor and the increasing demand for robust, available, and citable research that can inform both policy and practice. It also signals the consolidation of PLATE as a key venue for advancing knowledge on product lifetimes in a world facing urgent ecological limits.

Around 240 participants have attended recent PLATE conferences, from disciplines such as design, engineering, business management, marketing, environmental science, anthropology, geography, economics, sociology and politics. The number of papers presented has grown from 66 in 2015 to 162 in 2025, reflecting increased academic activity in the field. Papers are selected by a scientific committee through a rigorous peer review process. Conference proceedings are open access:
