Call for papers to issue on GIS and city planning (in the light of COVID 19)

17-09-2020

Urban planners, policy makers, designers and engineers are increasingly looking at Big Data as a tool to upgrade the lives of citizens. Data is already being produced and used for various solutions e.g. tracking vehicles to get a better idea of traffic movements at different times in the city, mapping trees to ensure a greener urban space, or installing sensors to get a better insight on air quality in more local areas of the city.

The shutdown of communities caused by COVID-19 affects both our social lives as well as the social economy, and it affects the way we use our cities. In this context, we are faced with an unprecedented opportunity and momentum in being able to understand the basic principles of how we use and work together in our cities.

In this issue, we explore how data can help support and qualify people's well-being in cities. How can we plan for increased use of public land, and how can we create more recreational and green spaces that support a social meeting across groups? And how can we simultaneously strengthen a local identity, with economic growth for retail and a vibrant city center? All based on the use of spatial information.
